How do we know others find smokers offensive?

Smokers tend to have a stale cigarette odor about them. The odor clings to the clothes, hair, hands, cars and homes. If you smoke around your kids, they smell too. Usually the smoker doesn't notice it, unless they quit smoking. Non-smokers can smell it on a smoker as much as up to ten feet away. It is truly amazing, that people who are otherwise fussy about the way they are groomed, dressed or present themselves, will allow themselves to stink. It's rude to stink, whether it's from smoke, not bathing, or too much perfume/cologne.

Kids are the first line of uncensored reactions to smoke smell. When I was a teacher, principal, and school superintendent, I would see children react to me or other staff both physically - almost flinching if a smoker got too close - and verbally - oooh... you were smoking on the way to school, when we were at recess, etc.

Watch sales people; those that don't smoke may prefer not to be helping you, or may back off a bit, or turn their head as your breath reaches them (our breath scent, good or bad, travels several feet when we speak.)
